Angles, channels, beams, joists and flats in North India come from two broad sources:
- Primary (integrated) producers — SAIL, RINL, Jindal Steel — making steel from iron ore and rolling sections in their own mills.
- Secondary producers and re-rolling mills — principally in Raipur / Chhattisgarh and Mandi Gobindgarh, Punjab — together with branded sources.
Why it matters
- Specification — government, PSU and many project specifications name primary producers, or require a mill test certificate traceable to one.
- Section range — primary producers roll the heavier beams and channels; rolling mills cover most standard angles, channels, flats and lighter joists.
- Price and availability — the two sources are priced differently and roll on different schedules.
- Weight — rolling tolerance affects actual weight per metre; agree actual vs theoretical billing.
How to write it
State one of: primary producer mandatory, primary producer preferred, or any IS 2062 / IS 808 compliant source. That single line changes which sources are quoted.
