Section and grade are two different things

Structural sections are defined by two standards: IS 808 for dimensions and sectional weight (ISMB, ISMC, ISA and so on) and IS 2062 for the steel grade. A complete order line reads, for example, ISMC 150, IS 2062 E250, 12 m, 10 MT. See the IS 808 guide.

Primary producer or rolling mill

Structural sections in North India come from two broad sources: primary (integrated) producers — SAIL, RINL, Jindal Steel — and secondary producers and re-rolling mills, principally in Raipur / Chhattisgarh and Mandi Gobindgarh, Punjab, together with branded sources such as Kamdhenu. Project and government specifications often mandate a primary producer; commercial fabrication commonly accepts either. State the requirement in the enquiry — it changes the quotation.

Theoretical weight vs actual weight

Sections are sold by weight but specified by piece and length. Rolled sections carry weight tolerances, so actual weight can differ from the IS 808 theoretical weight. Agree the billing basis — actual or theoretical — at the quotation stage. See the steel weight calculator.

ISI-marked, TC and local make

Three terms decide how structural steel is quoted:

• ISI — the section carries the BIS certification mark: it is produced under a BIS licence to the relevant Indian Standard.
• TC — the producer's test certificate, recording chemistry and mechanical properties for the heat or lot supplied.
• Local make — sections from secondary mills in the Mandi Gobindgarh, Raipur and other clusters. Some are ISI-marked, some are not; confirm when ordering.

Most indents simply say "ISI & TC". If the project also needs a named producer or third-party inspection, say so. See ISI mark, TC and MTC explained.

Lengths

Sections are commonly supplied in 6 m lengths, and in longer mill lengths (typically up to about 12 m) that travel on trailers rather than standard lorries. Cut lengths are quoted on request. State the length your fabrication needs and whether the site can unload long material.

Grade equivalents

IS 2062 E250 is broadly comparable to ASTM A36, EN 10025 S235JR / S275JR and JIS SS400 — comparable in strength class, not identical in chemistry or testing. Where a drawing specifies a foreign grade, send it; the equivalent IS grade is confirmed before quotation.
