304 or 316?
316 contains about 2% molybdenum, which improves resistance to pitting from chlorides — salt, coastal air, many cleaning chemicals and process fluids. For indoor food and kitchen equipment, 304 is the usual specification. Where equipment is washed with chloride-containing chemicals, sits in coastal air, or handles brine, acids or pharma process fluids, 316 is typically specified. Follow the drawing or process specification where one exists.
202 or 304?
202 replaces part of the nickel in 304 with manganese and nitrogen, which lowers cost but also lowers corrosion resistance. It performs acceptably indoors and in dry conditions, and is widely used for utensils, furniture and decorative work. For wet, food-contact or outdoor use, 304 is the safer specification. The two look identical — confirm the grade from the mill test certificate.
Checking the grade you receive
A magnet test does not distinguish stainless grades. The mill test certificate identifies the grade and heat; for critical work, buyers also run a PMI (positive material identification) or spectro test on receipt.

SS Sheets — common questions
What is the difference between SS 202 and SS 304?
304 contains about 8% nickel; 202 replaces part of the nickel with manganese. 202 is cheaper but less corrosion-resistant, and suits indoor, dry and decorative uses. For wet, food-contact or outdoor use, 304 is the usual choice.
What is the difference between SS 304 and SS 316?
316 adds about 2% molybdenum, which improves resistance to chlorides — coastal air, salt, and many cleaning and process chemicals. 304 is the general-purpose grade; 316 is specified for harsher environments.
Can a magnet tell whether a sheet is 304 or 202?
No. All three grades are essentially non-magnetic when annealed and can become slightly magnetic after forming. Grade is confirmed by the mill test certificate or a PMI / spectro test.
What is a 2B finish?
The standard cold rolled stainless finish — smooth, uniform and slightly reflective. BA (bright annealed) is more reflective; No. 4, satin and hairline are polished finishes for visible surfaces.
