Most delays in steel procurement happen before the order: a quotation is prepared, then revised because the grade, coating, class or billing basis was not stated. The checklist below covers what an enquiry needs, by product type.
Every enquiry
- Product and form — sheet, coil, plate, section, tube or pipe
- Standard and grade — for example IS 2062 E250BR, IS 513 CR2, IS 4923 YSt 310
- Dimensions — in millimetres
- Quantity — MT, pieces or both
- Producer preference — mandatory, preferred or open
- Documents — mill test certificate, inspection, and who inspects
- Delivery location and any site constraints (unloading, vehicle length)
- Required-by date and whether part deliveries are acceptable

- SHS / RHS / round tube: size × wall, IS 4923 / IS 1161 grade, finish
- ERW pipe: nominal bore, class (L / M / H), black or GI, end finish
