Structural hollow sections vs pipes

The same tube mill can make both, but they are bought against different standards:

Structural hollow sections — SHS, RHS and round structural tubes — are specified by outside size × wall thickness and a yield grade (YSt 210 / 240 / 310) under IS 4923 or IS 1161.
Pipes for fluid service — ERW pipes to IS 1239 — are specified by nominal bore (NB) and class (light, medium, heavy), black or galvanized.

Buyers often say "square pipe" or "rectangular pipe" for SHS and RHS. The terms refer to the same products.

Finish

Black (bare), pre-galvanized (made from GP coil) and hot-dip galvanized after fabrication are three different products with different corrosion performance and price. State the finish.

ISI pipes and "patra" pipes

Pipes and hollow sections are sold in two broad qualities:

ISI-marked — made from prime strip under a BIS licence to IS 1239, IS 1161 or IS 4923, with defined dimensions, wall thickness and mechanical properties.
"Patra" (non-ISI) — tubes rolled from secondary or scrap-derived strip ("patra"). Lower in price, with wider variation in wall thickness, weld quality and strength.

Patra tubes are used for non-critical work — temporary structures, light fencing, low-cost fabrication. They should not be used for pressure lines, fire-fighting, scaffolding or load-bearing structures, or wherever a drawing specifies an IS grade. State ISI or non-ISI clearly in the enquiry.
