ERW Pipes
ERW black and galvanized pipes for fluid service and general engineering. Plain-end black pipe weights calculated from IS 1239 outside diameter and wall thickness. Galvanized pipe weighs slightly more; screwed & socketed ends change weight per length.

Class decides wall thickness
Under IS 1239 the outside diameter is fixed for each nominal bore; the class — light, medium or heavy — sets the wall thickness. A 50 NB pipe has a 60.3 mm OD in every class. Always state the class; "50 NB GI pipe" alone is incomplete. See the NB to OD chart.
Grades & standards
Standard numbers define the product and grade; they do not by themselves certify a supply. State the edition and certificate requirement on your purchase order.

ERW Pipes — common questions
What is a patra pipe?
A pipe or hollow section rolled from secondary or scrap-derived strip, usually without ISI certification. It is cheaper but less consistent in wall thickness and strength, and suits only non-critical work. For pressure, fire-fighting, scaffolding or structural use, specify ISI-marked pipe.
What does ERW mean?
Electric resistance welded — the process used to make most MS and GI pipes from strip.
What is the difference between medium and heavy class pipe?
Same outside diameter, different wall thickness. Heavy class has the thicker wall and higher weight per metre.
Do you supply GI pipes?
Yes — GI (hot-dip galvanized) ERW pipes to IS 1239 are quoted by NB, class and quantity.
