Steel weight calculator
Theoretical weight of plates and sheets, angles, ISMC channels, ISMB beams, flats, square bars, round tubes and square or rectangular hollow sections — for estimating quantities before an enquiry.
Formulas used
| Shape | Weight |
|---|---|
| Plate / sheet | thickness × width × length (mm) × 7.85 ÷ 1,000,000 = kg |
| Flat bar | width × thickness (mm) × 0.00785 = kg/m |
| Round tube | (OD − wall) × wall × 0.02466 = kg/m |
| SHS / RHS | (2 × (A + B) − 4 × wall) × wall × 0.00785 = kg/m (approximate; ignores corner radii) |
| Square bar | side × side × 0.00785 = kg/m |
| Angle | thickness × (A + B − thickness) × 0.00785 = kg/m (ignores root radius) |
| ISMC / ISMB | IS 808 sectional weight (kg/m) × length |
Theoretical vs actual weight
These are theoretical weights at nominal dimensions. Rolled and welded products carry dimensional tolerances, so actual weight differs. Where material is billed by weight, agree the basis — actual or theoretical — at quotation. For structural sections, use the sectional weight (kg/m) from IS 808 or the producer's table.
