How IS 2062 grades are written
An IS 2062 designation has two parts: the grade, which gives the minimum yield strength in MPa, and the quality suffix, which describes impact-test requirements and the rolling / de-oxidation route.
- E250, E275, E300, E350, E410, E450, E550, E600, E650 — the number is the minimum yield strength (MPa) for the lower thickness range.
- A — no impact test requirement; general structural use.
- BR — Charpy impact tested at room temperature.
- B0 — impact tested at 0 °C.
- C — impact tested at −20 °C; for low-temperature or critical service.
A complete designation therefore reads IS 2062 E250BR or IS 2062 E350C. "E250" alone is incomplete for a purchase order where toughness matters.

Yield strength reduces as thickness increases, so the standard gives values by thickness band. For thick plates, check the design value against the actual plate thickness being ordered.
Edition
BIS has revised IS 2062 over time and has been issuing newer editions and parts. The edition should be stated on the purchase order, and the mill test certificate should be checked against that edition. If your specification quotes an older edition, say so in the enquiry.

These are comparable in strength class, not identical in chemistry, testing or thickness limits. Where a drawing specifies a foreign grade, confirm the IS equivalent before ordering.
What to put in an RFQ
- Grade and quality (for example E250BR)
- Form: sheet, coil, plate, section or flat
- Thickness / section size, width and length
- Quantity (MT or pieces)
- Whether a mill test certificate (MTC) is required, and whether third-party inspection applies
- Preferred producer, if specified
